There is nothing like slipping into a pair of flannel pajamas on a cool night. They are soft, warm and comforting. It reminds me of my childhood, when mom read us a story, tucked us in and gave us goodnight kisses.

I love pajamas. For me, pajamas means pampering. I think everyone should own at least one pair of pajamas or nightgown that feels luxurious. Find the best you can afford and don’t feel guilty for splurging. Which fabric feels best to you? Flannel? Cotton? Satin? Something else? It doesn’t matter really, as long as it feels good on your skin and doesn’t itch anywhere.

My jersey knit pajamas are so soft and comfortable that I sometimes wear them all day long. There are so many styles and fabrics available that I also love shopping for new pajamas.

My favorite style of pajama to sleep in are the jersey knit short and tank or tee sets, like the picture on the left. I generate a lot of body heat when I sleep, so these help keep me cool. Plus, they don’t tangle around my body when I roll over.

I have some longer pajama sets that I wear sometimes, but mostly on weekend mornings when I’m lounging around the house. I like pajamas so much that I think every day should be pajama day.

If you can’t have a pajama day every day, at least try to plan an hour or two  every week to relax and unwind. Take a warm bath, put on some lotion and your favorite pajamas. Snuggle on the couch with a warm blanket and a cup of tea. Watch some TV or read a book. Life doesn’t get much better than that.

Remember what it was like on the weekend when you were a kid? I used to get up on Saturday morning, grab a cup of dry cereal from the kitchen and sit wrapped up in my favorite blanket in front of the TV. My siblings and I would watch Saturday morning cartoons until my parents sent us outside to play. Back then, I loved flannel nighties on cold winter nights and cool cotton baby doll pajamas in the hot summer months.

Plus size sleepwear has come a long way since I first started buying it. You used to only be able to find one size, and now there are many to choose from. It almost seems that pajamas are becoming as important as regular clothes. I think that pajamas can say as much about you as your choice of clothes.

Do you prefer soft, loose and flowing, or snug-fitting and really warm? Sometimes what you wear says more about how warm or how comfortable you like to be when you’re sleeping than anything else.

There is also sleepwear that isn’t really sleepwear – like in the picture to the left. I wouldn’t wear this to sleep in, but I would definitely wear it to bed. I probably wouldn’t be wearing it for very long though.

Lingerie is some of the sexiest clothes you can wear. Doesn’t the model in the picture look alluring? And she has curves in all the right places. You can be sexy no matter what your size. Be bold – try on that baby doll or teddy made of satin or silk! Then buy the one that feels good when you put it on!

Intimate sleepwear can make a wonderful statement, and I would seriously consider wearing a tasteful negligee instead of pajamas to a pajama-themed party – if I was ever invited to one. (Since working on this article, I really want to have a pajama-themed party, and I’m trying to figure out how I can go about doing that.)

If you really love the sensual side of pajamas, there are items you can wear under your clothes – like teddies – that can also be worn to bed. Teddies can be found in a number of styles and fabrics, so it would be easy to find one that suits your tastes.

Pajamas and sleepwear have come a long way. In the middle ages, people slept naked for the most part. Then we started wearing “night shirts” - which are basically night gowns. In about 1880, the pajama (or pyjama) was brought over from somewhere in the middle east – some say India – for men to wear to sleep and lounge in. The pajama was born. It wasn’t brought to North America until around 1920, when it was initially popular for both men and women to wear them. Women went back to wearing night gowns for a while, but pajamas continued to be worn by men, and eventually became the popular item of clothing it is today.

With so many choices available for pajamas and other sleepwear, you’re sure to find something that really works for you. If you really love jeans for instance, I found some pajama jeans online. They look cool, can be worn all day long, and come in a large range of sizes. They literally look like a pair of jeans in the pictures.

There are vintage pajamas available as well – so if you really are into everything antique, these might speak to you. Some sleepwear from eras gone by looks comfortable – and some looks like it would make a great costume.

If you’re like me, and you love wearing pajamas all day, what about trying a pajama party vacation. A girlfriend getaway in pajamas sounds like a little bit of heaven to me. What better way to reconnect with an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. Go back to being young girls again by having a slumber party at a hotel or going to a weekend retreat in pajamas.

Pajamas are great. Find the kind you like and pretend – just for a day – that you are a kid again and let yourself wear them all day. You won’t regret it!
